Tot nou toe is boerdery gebaseer op die empiriese kennis wat van geslag tot geslag oorgedra is, maar deesdae staan die moderne boer voor probleme wat haas onoorkombaar is: kostes wat astronomies eskaleer, produkpryse wat val, stygende rentekoerse op grondpryse, wat nie uit die boerdery verhaal kan word nie en arbeidsonrus, om maar 'n paar te noem. Voeg daarby die knellende droogtes wat Suid-Afrika teister en die prentjie verdonker merkbaar. Hierdie faktore noop die boer om sy sake-en bestuursvernuf uit te brei en tot die uiterste te benut om sodoende te verseker dat sy plaas ekonomies so goed moontlik bestuur word - om sy skuldlas te beperk en om sy eie sowel as die landbousektor se voortbestaan te verseker.
Tradisioneel was boere nie verplig om veel syferkundige berekeninge te onderneem nie, maar dinge verander vinnig. Hierdie boek bevat die grondbeginsels van finansiële bestuur, ontleding en beheer en dit is eenvoudig uiteengesit met vele voorbeelde sodat die materiaal maklik vertolk kan word.
