
Soos internasionaal die geval is, word die
toegepaste taalkunde as studieterrein lank reeds in Suid-Afrika ondersoek,
asook ten uitvoer gebring. Daarvan getuig die talle publikasies wat oor jare
heen al oor die toegepaste taalkunde in Suid-Afrika verskyn het.
Hierdie publikasies was egter meestal in Engels. Vir ’n publikasie oor die toegepaste taalkunde in Afrikaans lê die veld dus braak. Dit is hierdie gaping wat met die boek gevul wil word. Hierdie boek het ten doel om die toegepaste taalkunde as selfstandige dissipline (wat dit internasionaal wel is) in Afrikaans te verken en in hierdie proses behoorlik gevestig te kry. Dit word gedoen met die hulp van bykans alle taalkundiges wat in hierdie dissipline in Suid-Afrika werk – nie net taalkundiges uit die Afrikaanse konteks nie, maar ook talle wat primêr in Engels werk. Die gesamentlike kundigheid van hierdie groep akademici word in die boek op ’n kragtige wyse byeengebring.
Die uiteenlopende komponente van die toegepaste taalkunde word sistematies uiteengesit en toegelig met Afrikaanse voorbeelde soos wat dit in die praktyk voorkom. Op hierdie wyse word die inhoud van die toegepaste taalkunde uitgepak vir ’n diverse gehoor: studente, akademici en belangstellendes in die taalkunde. Om hierdie rede is dit ’n boek wat verdien om gelees én gebruik te word.
